Why I Built KnifeCompare

I'm Richard, and I built KnifeCompare because I could not find the site I wanted when researching and buying a new knife.

My first regularly carried knife was a Kershaw Chive in college. Years later, after meeting a knife enthusiast who rekindled my interest, came a Spyderco Para 3, a Benchmade Mini Bugout, and then my first custom, bought at a hunting show.

Somewhere along the way — and with more than 70 knives now in my collection — knives stopped being merely useful objects and became a hobby I could spend endless time thinking about, reading about, and watching videos about: the designs, steels, makers, variations, discontinued models, dealer exclusives, unique stories, and much more.

Building the Tool I Wanted for Myself

I keep two lists: a long list of knives I would like to own eventually, and a short list of what I am hunting next. But whenever I am finally ready to buy, the process is always the same. I open four or five retailer tabs, compare prices, check for any sales that might be happening, and sometimes discover that the knife I want is out of stock at all the usual places.

Along the way, I started finding smaller retailers that had the knife when nobody else did. I also found larger retailers carrying exclusives that I only learned about after buying the standard model.

There was no single place that showed me the market clearly. So I built the tool I wanted.

How the Site is Structured

I spend much of my working life taking messy information and making it useful. KnifeCompare applies the same instinct to this hobby: one knife, one table, and the prices available across as many reputable retailers as I can find.

The rule is simple: retailers are ranked by price. Nothing else.

Some links are affiliate links, which means a retailer may pay KnifeCompare a commission if you make a purchase. That helps support the site, but it does not change what you pay or affect the rankings. If a major retailer has the lowest price, it goes first. If a small independent shop has the lowest price, it goes first.

I grew up in Florida fishing, hunting, and spending time outdoors. My collecting has been shaped by knives and everyday-carry tools that serve a real purpose but also give me that collector’s “fizz.” I also enjoy supporting American-made products whenever possible.

I have a soft spot for smaller mom-and-pop shops, so they are clearly identified in the listings, and there is a toggle that lets you spotlight them. That is meant to make them easier to find, not to put a thumb on the scale.

Trying to Make it 1% Better Every Day

KnifeCompare is still growing. I will be adding stories from my own experiences collecting and using knives, first-hand reviews, retailer histories, and buying guides, along with better information on shipping policies, promotions, loyalty programs, and what each retailer actually includes with an order.

If you spot a wrong price, a dead coupon, or a retailer I have missed, please tell me. The whole point is to make buying your next knife a little easier — and to replace at least a few of those open tabs.

The problem

Knife pricing is opaque. The same blade can vary by $30 or more between retailers, coupon codes hide in newsletters, and MAP rules mean the advertised price often isn't the real one. Collectors end up cross-checking half a dozen stores for every purchase.

What we do

We track knives as structured data β€” steel, lock, handle, blade shape β€” and rank every retailer we work with by price, on one page. Where a brand enforces MAP, we say "Price Drops in Cart" instead of showing a number we know is wrong.

How pricing works

Every price on this site is checked by hand against the retailer's own product page — no scraped feeds, no third-party price APIs. We record the price you'd actually see at checkout, and each table shows the date it was last verified. We don't play MSRP games: any savings figure you see is the spread between the highest and lowest price we've actually tracked, not a discount off a list price nobody charges.

Small shops matter

The big retailers are here, but the small US shops that anchor this community are flagged πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on every listing β€” and one toggle highlights those retailers you may want to support.

How we make money

When you buy through a link on this site, the retailer may pay us a commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never changes the ranking β€” offers are ordered by price, full stop. That's the entire business model, disclosed per FTC guidelines.

Corrections

Prices are checked regularly but can lag a retailer's site. If you spot a wrong price or a dead coupon, tell us and we'll fix it.
